Vintage Book Profile Revue and Price Guide: Book Profile: Macy’s On Parade, by Pamela Pease, 2002, A Pop-Up Book for Children of All Ages

A modern pop-up book with good potential for collectors

Although a relatively modern pop-up book, written and illustrated by Pamela Pease, Macy's On Parade is a book of charming illustrations and uncomplicated paper engineering (by the author).

Paintbox Press is a publisher established by Pamela Pease

Printed in China and published in 2002 by Paintbox Press of Chapel Hill (North Carolina), this book has seven double page pop-up spreads celebrating New York's traditional holiday season opener: The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The first of these parades was held in 1924 and it has grown into the biggest parade in the world today. It is organised by Macy's Department Store and has been televised since 1953.

A beautiful array of colours adorn this book

In addition to its pop-up scenes this book has a small fold out map - contained in a pocket on the first page; and some confetti - contained in a bag on the second page. The pop-ups are very colourful and include a street scene, marching bands, parade floats, a clown spiral, cartoon characters, entertainers in front of Macy's New York store and Santa and his reindeer.

Macy's Parade is famed for its marching bands

The size of this book is about 289x285mm, and it weighs around 920g. There is more text than you might ordinarily expect to see in a pop-up book, so younger children would need to have it read to them. Each individual page has a heading:

  • "Let's Have A Parade!"
  • Planning The Parade
  • Strike Up The Bands
  • Experience Of A Lifetime
  • Float Design
  • Travelling Stage Sets
  • Send In The Clowns
  • Becoming A Clown
  • Fantastic Balloons
  • Learning The Ropes
  • Celebrity Guests
  • Entertainment
  • Santa Claus
  • Grand Finale

Although a modern book, Macy's on Parade has considerable potential for being a future collectible. The pop-up genre often provides some treats and this book benefits from a strong appeal to collectors of all age groups: The words are uncomplicated but provide much detail, the subject matter has rarely been covered in this genre and the book will appeal to collectors of company profiles and parade publications, as well as the pop-up collectors.

Many modern pop-up books have laminated boards. This book benefits from the addition of a dust jacket which has the same illustration and information as the boards. Look out for copies with the dust jacket as these will be a better long term investment.

A good book for collectors of all ages

If you need values in US dollars, Euros or a host of other major currencies, a currency converter is included in the right hand sidebar of this page, and another in the footer area.

The book used in this profile was a first edition in fine condition and enclosed in a very good dust jacket. The paper engineering was complete and undamaged. It's estimated value in this condition is currently £35.
