Vintage Book Profile Revue and Price Guide: Sir William Russell Flint 1880-1969 – A Comparative Review of the Artist’s Signed Limited Edition Prints c1986

Published in 1986, this beautiful book revues the signed limited edition exhibition prints of Sir William Russell Flint (1880-1969). Knighted in 1947, Scotsman Sir William was renowned for his watercolours of women, although he worked in other mediums and portrayed other subjects. From 1936 he spent twenty years as the elected president of the British Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour.

The book itself had a limited print run of 1,500 copies and a label on the underside of the front free endpaper shows this copy is number 1303.

Published by Sir William Russell Flint Galleries Limited, the first five hundred copies formed the "de luxe" edition. They were bound in full blue morocco leather with raised bands and decorative gilt stamping to the cover, while all edges were finished in gilt with marbled endpapers.

The copy shown here is part of the Collectors Edition (numbers 501 to 1500). It is bound in blue half morocco with blue cloth, the gilt titles and decoration to the spine are in raised compartments with a facsimile signature to front cover, also in gilt. It has decorative marbled endpaper illustrations, entitled "Primaeval - Dragon and Bird" (from designs by the artist), and a blue silk page marker. The original slipcase is finished in blue cloth.

Written and compiled by Keith S. Gardner and Nigel D. Clark, with further contributions by Cecelia Green and Moira Shearer, both editions were published in 1986. The Collectors Edition comprises 329 pages plus the endpapers and introductory text. It is about 257x310mm and weighs 2.7kg.

Printed on high quality paper

A total of 106 signed limited edition prints are included, one to each page, with outline notes on the facing pages. There is also a list of private and trade subscribers including auction houses. The Foreword was written by the artist for an exhibition before his death and includes his facsimile signature. There are extensive introductory notes with biographical details, list of subjects, family tree, illustrations and photographs, which include reproductions of the artist's personal diaries.
