A bibliography of books written by author Bernard Cornwell. Price Guide included for UK and US 1st editions.

Bernard Cornwell was born on the 23rd February 1944 in London. As his parents were not married he was put up for adoption and grew up with his adoptive parents surname, 'Wiggins'. He later changed to his birth mother's maiden name "Cornwell" after the death of his adoptive father, but did not meet his birth mother, Dorothy Cornwell, until he was in his fifties. He was of a similar age when he met his birth father, a former Canadian airman named William Oughtred, and hence his extended family.

Bernard Cornwell became a history graduate at the University of London. His early careers were as a teacher and then working in television. However, he became a novelist when he moved to the United States in 1979. This was where his soon to be American wife (his second marriage) Judy lived. On entry to the USA he could not get a green card and therefore no regular form of employment was available to him: Hence he began writing - because such work did not require a work permit.

He established himself as a novelist with his Sharpe series of books, set during the Napoleonic Wars. These books were inspired by C.S. Forester's Hornblower books and other similar publications: Cornwell read many fictional books of naval exploits during the Napoleonic Wars and saw a niche for books set in land wars of the period.

He became a prolific writer of historical novels, often in series. As well as the Napoleonic Wars his serial tales are set in the Peninsular War, the American Civil War, Arthurian Britain, the Hundred Years War and the ninth century Anglo-Saxon period. He has also penned a number of stand alone historical stories set during other periods and a non-fiction book about Waterloo (published in 2014 by William Collins).

As a younger man he wrote an average of two books a year. Some of these were written under the pseudonym of 'Susannah Kells'. These were penned in collaboration with his second wife, Judy. In total there are fifty-nine Bernard Cornwell books (including those written as Kells) which have been published to date - and he's still going strong at the age of 76.

He is now an American citizen, splitting his time between Cape Cod and Charleston, but is also an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) This was awarded in the Queen's birthday honours list in 2006.

Select Bibliography and Price Guide

Unless stated otherwise, prices are for UK and US first editions, first printing, hardback books with dust jackets, both in fine condition. Some special limited editions are also included.

This author's books are highly collectable and there have been across-the-board price rises in recent years. These increases have particularly impacted the early books.

All prices are for guidance only - further research is recommended as there are many variables which impact the value of second hand books, and editions can be hard to identify. It should be noted that signed copies of Bernard Cornwell's earlier books usually sell for a significant premium. In contrast there are significant price reductions for books in anything less than fine condition.

This price guide includes books published up to 2006, the publication year of the final Sharpe novel (although another is now being written). Books published after this date are frequently still available from shops selling new books. Those which aren't have generally not been around long enough to attract a premium on the collector's market.

If you need values in US dollars, Euros or a host of other major currencies, a currency converter is included in the right hand sidebar of this page, and another in the footer area.
